Q+A with Bhavesh Patel
How long have you been investing as an accredited investor?
We have been investing as an accredited investor for almost three years.
What advice would you give to a newly minted accredited investor regarding investing?
In general, I would recommend diversifying in different asset classes, considering your needs for liquidity and passive income goals.
How have you achieved passive income in this protracted low-interest-rate environment?
I invest in stock and bonds, savings/money market accounts and with Secured Income Group.
What factors do you consider most before deciding on an investment?
I consider my personal tolerance of the risk of each investment and the return of each investment. I also consider the length of time the capital will be tied up, and evaluate my personal liquidity needs.
What have been some of the worst and best investments you have made as an accredited investor?
My worst investment was a Universal Whole Life insurance policy tied to index funds. It was underperforming and I transferred the funds to SIG. I consider SIG one of my best investments. They are a great alternative to buying your own real estate, as it provides the exposure to the returns that real estate can provide without the upfront expense.
Do you invest differently with your IRA or retirement account vs other funding sources?
I am definitely considering longer-term investments when using IRA funds.
Do you own a self-directed IRA? If so, what has been your experience with your self-directed IRA custodian?
Yes, my wife owns a self-directed IRA with Equity Trust Company. We have had a couple of minor challenges with Equity Trust specifically but have overcome them and it has overall been a pleasant experience.
What has been a good source of investing ideas over the years? How do friends, network of other investors, Wealth Advisor, Financial Planner, CPA, articles, publications factor into your decision?
I do listen to financial experts, family, friends, and do my own research.
What has your experience with SIG been like?
I found Secured Income Group almost 3 years ago, and I am so happy I did. Their customer service has been great, and the website platform is updated with interest paid quarterly like clockwork. We love the term flexibility and the fixed rates of return give us peace of mind.
